Curriculum options follow the Michigan Merit requirements. High school students can also take part in Career Technical Education (CTE), and Dual Enrollment or EMC through Glen Oaks Community College.
Extracurricular activities include middle school and high school robotics teams and E-sports. MHSAA sports to choose from include cross country, football, and volleyball in the fall, basketball and bowling in the winter, and softball, baseball and golf in the fall. If there is enough interest in any given year, track is also offered in the spring.
We build programs and try to make things happen based on student interest, so this list can change from year to year with the addition of more options.
Highlights

Congratulations Dr. Butts for receiving National Honors as one of the Top 10 Superintendents in the United States!
THE ARCHITECT OF CHANGE: A 30-Year Journey in Academic and Financial School Transformation
Dr. Kelvin Butts, Superintendent, Burr Oak Community Schools
Dr. Kelvin Butts' career trajectory—from starting as a school bus driver to becoming a science teacher, central office administrator, and now Superintendent of Burr Oak Community School District—reads like a blueprint for ascending educational leadership.
In this exclusive feature, Dr. Butts shares his experience tackling the most profound challenges in public education, from restoring financial solvency to achieving significant academic growth in partnership districts.
Building a Foundation of Growth
Dr. Butts' professional journey spans three decades, rooted in the sciences (Biology and Anatomy) and spanning every level of district operations. This deep, hands-on experience has informed his leadership philosophy.
"I’ve been an assistant principal, a middle school principal, a school improvement coordinator, and an interim superintendent," Dr. Butts explains. "Teaching all the sciences—biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physics—gave me a framework for problem-solving that I apply to district management: diagnose the problem, implement the intervention, and measure the results."
His most notable challenge came during his tenure as Superintendent of Benton Harbor Area Schools (BHAS), a district facing academic and financial distress.

Please join the Burr Oak Community Schools in welcoming Ms.Rockette to our staff.
She is the new Assistant Principal/Title I Director for the Burr Oak Community Schools.
Ms. Rockette is a native of Michigan, born and raised in Benton Harbor and has been in education for over 25 years. She began in the classroom, teaching middle school science for 5 years before going into administration. Prior to coming here she was an elementary school principal for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade.
Ms. Rockette has high expectations for student achievement and learning and wholly believe in the power of influence a teacher has on a child's life. She is very excited to be here and is looking forward to meeting and working with our community.
